Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

The little bug and I found an interesting place to explore today! Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill was the site of a former Shaker compound in Kentucky. The grounds were beautiful and very peaceful; there was such a serene feeling. It was outside of our normal destinations, but it was a very interesting, unique place!

It’s so interesting to think about the lives these people must have led- celibate, removed from the world. A guide told us that married couples would enter the Shaker religion and give up their marriage, living the rest of their days as “brothers” and “sisters”.  Hard to imagine that anyone would ever want to do this, but I guess if you don’t like your spouse it might have been easier than divorce in those days!

It might have had more appeal for adults or older kids, but A loved the horses and the broom she was given after a woodworking demonstration! It’s the little things, I guess.
